Our 2019-2020 Season

Rough Magic
https://www.jaumebalmes.com/b16y2ujx7i1 October 10-12, 2019
When characters from Shakespeare and classic Greek drama engage with a nerdy student dramaturg and a Coney Island lifeguard, magic abounds in what the Ithaca Journal called “an adventure more original than anything Hollywood has done in years…” Prospero is trying to recover his magic and the chain reaction results in acts of heroism and romance that threaten the destruction of Manhattan.
Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, this epic adventure influenced by action movies, comic books, and the magic of theatre combines characters from classical plays with contemporary settings in a play that celebrates the ‘character’ inside us all.

The most anticipated and decadent Music event of the year just got spicier: celebrate Latin music and culture with this year’s Death by Chocolate, which pays tribute to the lively rhythms and textured Latin sounds, including some sizzling pop songs like Ricky Martin’s “Living La Vida Loca” that will bring patrons to their feet. Still featuring delicious desserts, coffee and cocoa, this year’s Death by Chocolate will bring the essence of rich Latin legacy.

Shakespeare’s dark cautionary tale about destructive political ambition comes to life in Smith’s rendering of this work, which brings forth its contemporary relevancy. The play, centering on a prophecy that Macbeth should be ruler of Scotland, depicts the terrors he unleashes on those around him as he claws his way to the top, as well as the guilt and paranoia that infect both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as a consequence.

What came before and what will come after: examining the fleeting nature of time and the enduring permanence of action, this dance show uses movement to reveal connections between the temporary and permanent, historical roots and resulting legacies. With dynamic, thought provoking choreography that emphasizes the connectedness of disjointed time, this performance promises to captivate.

Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

War and Peace

War has been an aspect of humanity since the beginning of time, and throughout history, few topics have captured the attention of songwriters like the despair of violence and the hope for peace. This concert features songs about the subject ranging from popular songs such as Edwin Starr’s “War” to classical compositions such as Gustav Holst’s “Mars, the Bringer of War.” Showcasing an array of instruments and talents, this concert echoes the wisdom of Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our response to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”
